Tamburi Mundi Special "Rituals"

Date:

Friday, August 8, 2014 - 14:00

20.00 Tamburi Mundi Special "Rituals"
Location: E-Werk, auditorium |: 22 € / 18 € (reduced)

This year's "big concert evening" is dedicated to the festival theme of "Rituals". As in previous years, a program is developed especially for this evening. In 2014 worked out of experiences and encounters during the festival week. Inspiration and goal remains the term "ritual". The artists bring different musical and ritual elements from their different cultures and present them on stage condensed together: shamanic music from Korea, Brazilian drums of Candomblé cult, Persian and Moroccan Drum rites, up to elements of contemporary music. This happens partly associative and improvisational, but also in parts strictly structured and composed. Sound, rhythm and movements turn the stage into a place of possibilities and let the laudience's own pictures and imaginations arise. We are moving from sacred moments to everyday rituals - even in ritualized sequence of a concert evening with audience, applause, bows, encores ...

Baroque worlds of sound - and movement and Modern Dance
- Music by Johann Sebastian Bach, improvisations -
Location: E-Werk, Great Hall | Admission: 18 € / 15 € (concessions)

Baroque dance is a dance style which appeals to even modern viewers directly and deeply: Indeed Baroque art is strictly bound by form and ritualized, but at the same time characterized by impulsive joy of playing, pleasure of ornamentation and improvisation. It invites one to start a dialogue with modern and exotic elements. Two drummers, two flutists and two dancers embark on a journey through baroque sound and movement worlds, between gods heaven and the underworld, into the heart of modernity - embedded in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and improvisations.

Bernd Niedecken - Baroque Dance, Modern Dance

Glen Velez: Meditations for Frame Drums The Drums of the Shaman

Event Photo:

Date:

Tuesday, August 5, 2014 - 16:00

22.00 Glen Velez: Meditations for Frame Drums
The Drums of the Shaman
Location: E-Werk, Great Hall | Admission: 12 € / 10 € (reduced)

"Breathing and movements direct the sound and the rhythm" - as the essence of shamanic drumming is described. Many traditions describe how one is led through the game on the frame drum on an inner journey, a slowing of time in a meditative space. Glen Velez `close affinity with the frame drum began precisely because of this feeling and to this day he travels on those inner streets while he plays the frame drum in his inimitable way.
We are pleased to present this very special percussionist to the audience in Freiburg again. In his colo concert he leads us back to the roots of drum art!

In collaboration with: Carl Schurz Haus, Freiburg
Supported by: Cooperman (USA)

From steppe wind and thunder sound

Event Photo:

Date:

Tuesday, August 5, 2014 - 14:00

20.00 From steppe wind and thunder sound
Location: E-Werk, auditorium |: 15 € / 12 € (concessions)

With the Mongolian nomads the storyteller was the center of their community, the stories of a people were kept safe by him. In Turkey there were Meddahs, the mischievous storytellers, who caused the people in the coffee houses to laugh and think.

These two virtuosos turn the evening into an evening of musically story tellers, Enkhjargal Dandarvaanchig, the vocal artist with his horse-head fiddle from Mongolia and Murat Coskun, a virtuoso on the frame drum. "Morin Khuur" is the violin, which erepresents the horse and the infinity of the steppe. It's tone tells of the vastness of the sky. The frame drums are counted among the oldest drums in the world and like no other instruments in the world it is home in almost all cultures. Sometimes preserving profound, sometimes rebellious cheeky and cheerful, free-spirited, committed to the narrative power of their voices and instruments, the musicians take their audience after a few cycles and tones into a fascinating encounter of sounds and rhythms. They ladle from the cultural wealth of their peoples and tell the unforeseen.

Enkhjargal Dandarvaanchig (horse-head fiddle, over and undertone vocals)
Murat Coşkun (frame drums, percussion)

Sunday, 03 August 2014 at 8 p. m.
At Christ Church in Freiburg, Maienstr. 2, 79102 Freiburg

The Tamburi Mundi Festival is pleased with three high quality musicians who can be heard for the first time in Freiburg:
Arianna Savall (Barcelona), Petter Udland Johansen (Oslo) and David Mayoral (Madrid). Together with the ensemble Capella Antiqua Bambergensis they take the audience into times long past with music and songs. Exceptional compositions of the Middle Ages from Andalusia, Southern Italy, Germany, but also from Norway Give an impression of the sound diversity of the Middle Ages and testify a timeless melodic beauty of these songs. The concert features musical treasures, such as the mystical Marian songs from the "Red Book" Catalan "Libre Vermell" which Arianna Savall with her crystal clear voice and the sparkling sound of her harp interprets in a pleasant manner. She is accompanied by the Hardanger fiddle of the Norwegian musician Petter Udland Johansen, by the Spanish master percussionist David Mayoral and the Capella Antiqua Bambergensis on musical instruments of the Middle Ages. And if in some pieces, the frame drummers Murat Coşkun and Paolo Rossetti Murittu join in, former kings would have been forced to dance.

Petter Udland Johansen - Hardingfele, cittern, vocals
David Mayoral - Santur, Percussion
and the Capella Antiqua Bambergensis:
Wolfgang Spindler: Organetto; Andreas Spindler: shawm, bagpipe, Cornetto Muto, glockenspiel, fiddle, recorders; Anke Spindler: fiddle, nyckelharpa, gothic harp, Platerspiel; Thomas Spindler: Percussion

After the traditional drum parade and the festival opener (6 p.m.) Tamburi Mundi invites You to a Moroccan night (8 p.m.) at the E-Werk in Freiburg (Germany) to get You in the right mood for the exciting festival week under the festival motto "Rituals".
Guests include Aissaoua-musicians from Marrakech. Together with the bagpipes player Thomas Gundermann (Member of the Munich ensemble "Embryo"), they give an insight into the Sufi music of Morocco and the musical rituals of Aissaoua, which are considered the "fakirs" of North Africa. The members of this Sufi congregation during their traditional healing ceremonies handle with poisonous snakes, sharp knives and boiling water, thereto play polyrhythmic, ecstatic music to enter a trance. For that they use Rhaitas (shawm), Bendir (frame drums), reed flutes and religious songs.

Snakes, knives and water will not exist at the Freiburg E-Werk, but rousing music by authentic musicians who let us participate in the ceremonial power of their music.

9th Tamburi Mundi Festival August 2 - 10, 2014

Event Photo:

Date:

Saturday, August 2, 2014 - 08:00

9. TAMBURI MUNDI – Festival „Rituals“

Internationales Festival für Rahmentrommeln im Freiburger E-Werk vom 02. bis 10. August 2014

This years festival is shaped by a particular guiding idea. After „Crossing Borders“ (2012) and „The Sound of the Unknown“ (2013) this years main topic in the programm will be „Rituals“. The frame drum is one of the oldest instruments in the world and her sound in many cultures is closely connected to the practice of rituals, like for example in the close to nature cult of the shamans, as a rhythmic accompaniment of the whirling derwishes or in the afro-brasilian Candomblé as well as in the wild tarantella dance in Italy.

Presentations, courses and particular concerts allow the participants to approach the topic „Rituals“ in many different ways- or to just let themselves carry by the sound of the drums.
